Leftovers were ultimately sold for $10 in very limited quantities via Virtual Vending Machine pulls on HWC, and the sales never seemed to go as planned. It is believed the ones from this era were produced in the 1,200 to 1,500 range. Since RLC party cars were limited to the 1,000 or so people in attendance, these were in fact some of the lowest quantity Hot Wheels cars out there. I’m sure you’ve heard the whole, “they made pink cars for girls and therefore didn’t make a lot of them because Hot Wheels were intended for boys” - someone always mentions it in every Hot Wheels documentary. The idea behind releasing the spectraflame pink party cars was to celebrate the fact that spectraflame pink redlines were some of the rarest (and most valuable) cars around. Hot Wheels Poison Pinto from the 2007 RLC Party in Spectraflame Pink with the 2006 sELECTIONs (spectraflame dark green) and 2003 HWC Series 2 / Neo-Classics (spectraflame red) releases This would continue the trend of releasing a party vehicle with a previous HWC deco, and would be the first of many spectraflame pink vehicles to come! The car turned out to be a spectraflame pink Bye-Focal with the same graphics as the HWC Series 2 release. I was there! I remember the excitement while waiting for the doors to open as everyone in line speculated what the car would be for the event. 18 months after the inaugural RLC party - the typical length of time it takes for a Hot Wheels idea to be delivered to collectors - the RLC party was back at the 2005 Nationals event in Chicago. The night must have set off the idea to make these RLC parties a bi-annual event at every Nationals and Convention going forward. the first “pink party car” wasn’t even pink! Second Generation (2005 to 2012) The HWC team selected the #’70s Van since Hot Wheels graphic designer (at the time) Brian Fitzgerald had recreated the nostalgic flame deco on the Flying Customs release the year before, and recolored this one in spectraflame black. There was no knowing that this would become a bi-annual thing. They chose a Friday night during the convention, had drinks and cookies, and gave away a FREE HWC/RLC vehicle along with thousands of dollars in Hot Wheels product! There was no long-term strategy. Back in 2003, in conjunction with the 35th anniversary of the brand and the early success of the Red Line Club, the Hot Wheels team decided to throw the inaugural RLC Party to thank collectors. What I am trying to say is that the Aristocracy government in Shardlight felt like it only extended within a city or a state, yet there seems to be other Aristocracies throughout the nation in the game universe. Shouldn't he have a different title like "Emperor President" or whatever since he did started it. At times, Shardlight felt like this, but the game kept referencing that the Aristocracy government extended throughout the post Apocalyptic American with their own director despite that Tiberius, a director himself, started the new government. I would imagine that such a post apocalyptic world would be closer to Mad Max or the Walking Dead where there are small city communities with their own form of government. If Tiberius did started it, why are there other Aristocracies in the game? Surely, after the bombings, there would be different types of government spread across the USA considering how the bombings made the cities isolated form one naother. In addition, didn't Tiberious started the Aristocracy? If I remembered correctly, Julian started the new government and based it heavily on Ancient Greek themes after he lost his wife and child. While the game stated that he needed the notes to mass produced the cure, why was it needed if he knew how to make the cure? It would have made more sense if the Minstry of Medicine had an ingredient needed (that cannot be found in the wild due to being synthetic) to make more of the cure. That said, the whole end goal of getting Aquino's research notes didn't make any sense since he developed the cure while in hiding. For example, Gordon's purpose in the game is to ask for a mask and get sick so that Amy can bring someone out of the Quarantine Zone Other than maybe Amy, the characters in the game felt flat as if they were only in the game because of the puzzles. I just finished playing the gog version of the game (hence the reason why my profile says that I don't have it) and the overall plot was weak especially at the start of the Quarantine Zone to the end of the game. That being said the art, music and voice acting are nice. The plot is fairly weak and characters are one dimensional - again compared to Primordia, Gemini Rue, Technobabylon. It could be worse but Wadjet published games with far better puzzles. Many things in games, including conversations (and perhaps high level quest flow, depending on the game), are better done with visual tools than text - especially if these tasks are to be done by non-programmers.Originally posted by TheRedComet:The puzzles are pretty much dead giveaways. It is usually programmers that seem to want to ignore them, but i'm 100% sure that is because they can do most of the stuff with pure text (though rarely at the same speed as a good visual tool would allow, even if they think otherwise - note that i'm not talking about scripting here, this is often better done via a scripting langauge) and they do not like working with GUIs and such (i am one of the apparently rare programmers who likes working with GUIs) so they come up with excuses why their way is better. Personally i have worked professionally in game tools for many years and visual tools are always an improvement over something basic. These are all tools that are used to do real work. Witcher 2's tools also include visual quest and FSM ("steering") editors. For other examples see the dialog editor used in Witcher 2 (REDkit) or the editors used in Bethesda's games (the engine might be a bit clunky at times but the tools are largely visual, outside of quest-specific scripting of course). As an example see Obsidian's conversation editor described here that they have used for several of their projects. Having visual tools is certainly not just for beginners, i guarantee you that most AAA and many AA and even smaller projects use dedicated visual tools for things like dialogue. While they are great for beginners, getting real work done is problematic. I've always skewed away from visual programming and dialogue engines. Microsoft, which has seen Xbox One hardware sales suffer on a relative basis, probably has more interest in using first-party titles (and even console hardware itself) as a kind of loss leader to attract more regular revenue through subscriptions.īut as Microsoft and Sony both prepare to launch new consoles next year, the relative value of their competing game subscriptions could play a big role in consumers' purchasing decisions. With over 100 million PS4 systems sold worldwide, Sony is probably still seeing decent "legacy" sales even for older first-party titles. In a sense, the disparity between Microsoft and Sony in terms of subscription exclusives shows nothing more than the vast gulf in market position between the two companies. When asked about adding more first-party titles to PlayStation Now, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan told that "the nature and scale of some of the first-party games that we are making leads us to think that, right now, it's better to spend energy on making sure that the launch of those games is a massive entertainment event." Ryan added that " The Last of Us 2 next year will fall into that category." AdvertisementĮnlarge / Spider-Man may not have set sales records if it was available for free with a PlayStation Now subscription last year. It doesn't look like Sony will be following Microsoft's lead in this regard any time soon. Since then, subscribing to Game Pass has meant day-one access to Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2, Forza Horizon 4, Crackdown 3, and Gears of War 5, in addition to hundreds of older first- and third-party titles across all three Xbox consoles. The vast majority of PlayStation Now subscribers who had any interest probably bought and played through these games months ago, and their addition at this late date might be too little, too late to serve as a major subscription incentive.Ĭompare that to Microsoft, which pledged in early 2018 that every first-party Microsoft Game Studios release would be available to Xbox Game Pass subscribers from the first day of their original release. At this point, though, those games are 1.5, 3.5, and 5.5 years old, respectively, and are available for an MSRP $20 or less as "PlayStation Hits" as well. PlayStation Now members who want to play Spider-Man, Detroit: Become Human, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Ratchet & Clank (2016), The Tetris Effect, or any MLB: The Show titles still have to buy them a la carte, to name just a few.įurther Reading Sony slashes PlayStation Now streaming prices ahead of Google Stadia launchSony is beginning to show small signs of change in this regard, announcing last month that it was adding God of War (2018), Uncharted 4, and Infamous: Second Son to the PlayStation Now lineup for a limited time. But a good chunk of the games Sony uses to set the PS4 apart still aren't offered to subscribers. Sure, Sony-produced console exclusives like The Last of Us and Bloodborne have been on PlayStation Now for a while. The service has also suffered because Sony, unlike Microsoft, has proved unwilling to use high-demand, first-run, first-party exclusives as an incentive for players to subscribe. Public perception is only part of the problem for PlayStation Now. Turning a brand with that kind of baggage into an Xbox Game Pass competitor is an uphill battle to say the least. That's not a scientific result, of course, but it suggests a large part of the potential audience still sees PlayStation Now primarily as an expensive streaming service for legacy PlayStation titles, as it was when it launched. SQL databases are table based, while NoSQL databases can be document-oriented, key-value pairs, or graph structures. Here are some of the main differences between SQL versus NoSQL databases: Structure However, under the surface lie some significant differences that affect NoSQL versus SQL performance, scalability, and flexibility. In addition to supporting data storage and queries, they both also allow one to retrieve, update, and delete stored data. Non-relational Database: The Difference Explained Main differences between NoSQL and SQLĪt a high level, NoSQL and SQL databases have many similarities. These demands exist across every industry vertical and application domain, including IoT, user analytics, personalization, ad tech, eCommerce, gaming, and social networks. NoSQL manages the scale and agility challenges you may face in modern applications, especially ones that handle large volumes of rapidly changing data. The most common NoSQL databases include MongoDB, Cassandra, HBase, Redis, Neo4j, and CouchDB. NoSQL uses non-tabular data models, which can be document-oriented, key-value, or graph-based. NoSQL databases have a dynamic schema for unstructured data, making integrating data in certain types of applications easier and faster. NoSQL is schema-less (no fixed data model). NoSQL non-relational databases work well with unstructured data and typically possess the following properties: This allows data architects to simply scale them by supplementing clusters with additional servers. NoSQL databases are scalable horizontally, meaning that they use multiple nodes in a cluster to handle increased workloads. Furthermore, instead of using SQL to query the database, NoSQL databases use varying query languages (some don't even have a query language). As a result, NoSQL databases don't follow a rigid schema but instead have more flexible structures to accommodate their data-types. While SQL databases are best used for structured data, NoSQL databases are suitable for structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data. NoSQL databases are non-relational databases that store data in a manner other than the tabular relations used within SQL databases. Read more: What Does an SQL Developer Do? Role, Salary, and Skills What is NoSQL? While in some cases this may mean that SQL databases are limited by the resources available on the server, cloud-based storage and other technologies can provide more scalability with SQL. SQL databases are scalable vertically, meaning that you can increase the maximum load by adding further storage components like RAM or SSD. Within a SQL database, tables are linked through "foreign keys" that form relations between different tables and fields, such as customers and orders or employees and departments. Organized into columns and rows within a table, SQL databases use a relational model that work best with well-defined structured data, such as names and quantities, in which relations exist between different entities. Structured Query Language (SQL) is a programming language that allows both technical and non-technically-minded users to query, manipulate, and change data in a relational database. In this article, you'll learn about each type of database, how they are similar and different from one another, and how to decide which type of database is suitable for your particular data application. Though both methods effectively store data, they differ in their structures, scalability, relationships, language, and support. There are two primary databases used for storing digital data: SQL ( relational databases) and NoSQL (non-relational databases). As you can see above, we’ve added in shield icons so players can tell who Horatio’s shield will deflect in the opponent’s next turn. The A button prompt was added so you can control the speed of the dialogue, and the speech bubble now animates a ripple out from the character to make it even more clear who is doing the talking.įinally, let’s take a last look at Horatio’s first fight from the latest build of the game. You can also see a bit of the UI (user interface) changes. Now I can see it even better!!!! Wowwww!!!!!!! The team bands got thicker for more quick visual clarity, so now you can see clearly who Horatio is fighting - blue versus red. Horatio’s son, Hansel, was put into the window of the house to help push the urgency of defending him. Horatio got a new tractor as well, somehow, because bigger blueberries and wheat call for bigger tractors! But the taste remained just as flavorless. So we went back over them and made them way more plump and juicy! OKAY! I like how they taste now!!!!! They were kind of grossly dehydrated and made me feel strange. Once we got the dialogue from Will Stamper, our narrator, we heard him call Horatio out as “a blueberry farmer.” This resonated with us so we added blueberries to his farm! After a while the blueberries just didn’t feel fantastical enough. Horatio was just any old farmer at first. Then we made him a farmer! Seasoned killer, or blueberry cultivator? We went with making him a farmer and sketched out a possible scenario for you, the player, to find him in the midst of. He started in the Arena in our first prototype. Okay, now that we’ve got that out of the way… storytime! In the images below, the ones on the left are from earlier builds of the game and the one to the right of it shows the progress of change. There’s so much we could tell you but, for this blog post, we’ll focus on the opening fight scene with Horatio. This happened with the art, the dialogue, the level design, the music, etc. Even before the debut at PAX Prime ‘14, we went through several iterations until a quest or the story felt right. Or, changes came out of necessity depending on the feedback we got from players in usability lab or PAX. The changes we’ve made since the start of development came organically at times. If you’re interested in anything that got reworked, you can hit the jump and see some comparison images! (This video footage shows Game 4 gameplay as of May 2015.) You might have first seen our blueberry farmer at PAX Prime 2014 when he was first flung into the chaos we’ve code named “Game 4.” We’ve put together a video of the first 20 minutes of said chaos in case you missed it, or just want to see some of the changes since then. *Spoiler Alert* Video and blog post reveals a huge chunk of the story from Game 4.
